Sheryl Denise Swoopes was born March 25, 1971 was the first player to be signed in the WNBA when it was created in 1996 She has won three Olympic Gold Medals and is a three-time WNBA MVP. Frequently referred to as the “female Michael Jordan,” Swoopes is famous for both her offensive and defensive skills. In 2005, she averaged 18.6 points, 85% free throws, 4.3 assists, 2.65 steals and 37.1 minutes playing time per game. On April 15, 2013 Sheryl was named the head women’s basketball coach for the Loyola University Ramblers in Chicago. This is her first coaching job. She said: “I am extremely honored and humbled to be chosen to lead the Loyola University Chicago women’s basketball program,” Swoopes said. “Loyola is a special place and I immediately felt welcome here. Having played for some of the game’s best coaches as well as with and against some of the most talented players in women’s basketball history, I have broadened my knowledge and hope to use those experiences to bring championships to Rogers Park. There is a lot of talent already in place and I cannot wait to get into the gym and get started.”
